Biography
Wayne McCombs’ family moved to a farm south of Claremore in 1958. In the ninth grade he began working at the local radio station, KWPR. The station was a 500 watt, AM daytime station at the 1270 frequency.
During his years at Claremore High School and Oklahoma Military Academy/Claremore Junior College, Wayne did a variety of jobs including, record shows, news, broadcasting live and tape delay sports, selling commercials, writing and recording commercials, plus engineering duties. He left the station in 1973 when he began attending the University of Tulsa and then took a staff announcer job at Tulsa radio station KVOO.
McCombs had a 40 year career in broadcasting, journalism and public relations. He retired in 2023 after serving as the Executive Director of the J.M. Davis Arms and Historical Museum in Claremore for 14 years.
